  • Purpose and Scope

    Works under limited direction to direct Shelby County Schools (SCS) social media strategy operations and provide leadership for comprehensive project management support on externally-aimed projects and initiatives. Aligns day-to-day duties of the Communications Associate.

    Essential Job Functions

    1. Directs the District’s social media strategy and management of all accounts and activities.


    1. Establishes annual goals for continuous enhancement of social media functions.


    1. Implements strategies for increasing public awareness and publicity of SCS news, events and accomplishments using the SCS social platforms.


    1. Coordinates and creates engaging digital content for social channels to inform parents, students and staff and highlight SCS successes.


    1. Develops proactive social media strategies to support the SCS handling of sensitive issues, initiatives or planning efforts.


    1. Develops and provides social media training and support for school administrators and central office staff.


    1. Serves as a lead for the Communications Department and collaborates with SCS staff at all levels to effectively develop and implement external project plans, including measureable goal-setting and status reports.


    1. Implements a wide range of communication tactics to advise and support external projects, strategies and/or campaigns


    1. Leads planning meetings and conducts presentations on behalf of the Communications Department.


    1. Assists in the coordination and implementation of public feedback opportunities, including but not limited to surveys and focus groups.


    1. Consults with photographers, printers, ad representatives and related vendors and service providers to support assigned projects.


    1. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Graduation from an accredited university or college with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, or related field; Plus, four (4) years of related experience OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience totaling eight (8) years. (PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED).


    Degree Equivalency Formula:

    Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

    Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included. 

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills, with the ability to swiftly and accurately understand complex data and perform analysis
    • Skill in developing data-supported solutions and using fact-based logic; ability to translate complex analysis in easy-to-understand manner and present to a broad audience
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to provide direction, expectations and mentorship
    • Ability to work in team settings as well as manage tasks independently
    • Ability to manage daily administrative tasks without losing sight of long-term goals and planning.
    • Ability to utilize data to enhance the quality of work
    • Experience managing project-related budgets
    • Demonstrated experience with a variety of communication platforms, including but not limited to: mass messaging, social media, printed and/or digital publications video tools and we content management systems
    • Strong understanding of Microsoft Office programs, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel

    Physical Requirements and Working Environment

    Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment; must be able to use hands and fingers

    Unavoidable Hazards:  The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.
