  • Purpose and Scope

    Responsible for ensuring that the charter school sector is in the top 25% of performance across the state (defined as a combined success rate that would put our charter schools in the top 25% of performance state­wide) by leading a "best-in-class" charter and new schools application processes.

    Primary point person for conducting and communicating school landscape analyses that lead to diverse models in locations with the most need for quality school options & then recruiting and supporting interested operators to complete high quality applications.

    Leads the new schools review processes by recruiting and training volunteers to evaluate high quality school options; through conducting interviews of interested applicants and engaging the community around relevant applicants.

    Writes and compiles high quality briefings for cabinet officials and the Shelby County School Board on the charter school process and each interested applicant so as to ensure that policy makers have the information they need to make strong and informed decisions.

    Our goal is for the sector collectively to be in the top 25% relative to statewide performance by 2025; this requires annual progress that is both ambitious, yet feasible, and requires exceptional leadership capacity and management acumen.

    At present, the charter school sector is a total of 45 schools with more than 12,000 students.

    Essential Job Functions

    1. Oversees the school recruitment; development, and application processes for charter school applications in Shelby County Schools and any RFP processes where the district seeks partners to manage schools within the district.
    2. Recruits and trains all volunteers and staff responsible for reviewing and making recommendations on new-school applications.
    3. Researches gaps in our portfolio of school options so as to inform the kinds of schools we seek to partner with.
    4. Writes briefings to inform administration officials and Shelby County School Board Members about the quality of applications so as to inform strategic decisions.
    5. Serves as the primary point person to defend Shelby County on any appeals to the Tennessee State Board of Education.
    6. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in Business or Education, or equivalent, plus an additional 4 years related experience in Education and Charter experience specifically, OR a combination of equivalent education and/or paid, exempt level, directly relevant experience for a total of 8 years

    • Ability to tackle the operational challenges of the school district in a complex, changing political and educational environment
    • Ability to manage daily administrative tasks without losing sight of long-term goals and planning.

    Physical Requirements and Working Environment

    Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment; must be able to use hands and fingers

    Unavoidable Hazards:  The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.
