  • Purpose and Scope

    The primary focus of the Director of Student Affairs is to build and support the capacity of the organization and SCS to ensure four-year college eligibility and persistence for all students. This is achieved by developing and monitoring the systems and practices that promote healthy schools, communities, and classrooms reflecting SCS’s values, mission, and commitment to equity.

    Essential Job Functions

    1. Develops goals, objectives, and long range plans to attain the vision and mission of the department; participates in high-level planning and decision making for dropout prevention program.
    2. Provides leadership to coaching advisors and develop managers in their roles and responsibilities for student engagement (behavioral, emotional, and cognitive).
    3. Monitors state and federal legislation governing assigned areas and programs, and ensures that the organization is in compliance.
    4. Ensures that the Assistant Superintendent of School Operations is kept fully informed of matters within the department, and advised him/her on such issues.
    5. Oversee the coordination of the Advisory program implementation and articulation from K to 12th grade in close coordination with the Assistant Superintendent of School Operations.
    6. Communicates with internal and external audiences on local, state and national levels to articulate information regarding department programs.
    7. Builds upon and ensures execution and achievement of the Strategic Priorities and future goals of the district.
    8. Provides leadership to ensure school culture and climate reflects the organization’s commitment to college-readiness and persistence for all students.
    9. Attends School Board meetings/work sessions, and prepares and presents reports for the School Board as requested and directed.
    10. Directs/creates the preparation of reports, presentations, newsletters, marketing materials and other documents.
    11. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Leadership, Human Resources, Technology or related field equivalent, plus an additional seven (7) years of related experience for a total of education/experience of eleven (11) years.  (PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED).


    Degree Equivalency Formula:

    Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

    Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included. 

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Knowledge of the full range of SCS functions and organizational practices, or ability to rapidly acquire this body of knowledge
    • Ability to tackle the operational challenges of each school in a complex, changing political and educational environment
    • Skill in developing data-supported solutions and using fact-based logic; ability to translate complex analysis in an easy to understand manner and present to a broad audience
    • Outstanding leadership skills and ability to build high-performing teams through both recruitment and selection and professional development
    • Ability to manage daily tasks without losing sight of long-term goals and planning
    • Knowledge in building systems and practices to support healthy and high performing student and adult cultures

    Physical Requirements and Working Environment

    Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment; must be able to use hands and fingers for sign language.


    Unavoidable Hazards:  The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.


    Sensory (ADA) Requirements: The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities.
