  • Purpose and Scope

    The Executive Director of Continuous Improvement identifies opportunities for innovative ideas that need to thrive and drive change for Shelby County Schools. The Executive Director supports educational excellence across the District and establishes clear vision and strategic direction by creating a culture of collaboration in order to nurture the ideas that need the support of this office. Works closely with all divisions within the District, establishing cross collaborative teams that solve complex challenges facing the District.  Collaborates with all necessary stakeholders to design, test, and measure ideas that will transform the District and works in close collaboration with the Superintendent’s executive cabinet to meet Destination 2025 goals and drive improvement in student achievement and District functions, through innovative ideas.

    Essential Job Functions

    1. Identifies, in partnership with the Executive leadership team, division staff, and community stakeholders, innovative ideas that need to be placed within the Division of Continuous Improvement.
    2. Grows and defines all necessary resources and teams for idea incubation and the best methodology for implementation, assembling unlikely partners in order to maximize every aspect of the idea. Involves the community and welcomes solutions and processes from multiple sources.
    3. Develops cross departmental collaborative teams that can accelerate ideas across the district in alignment with strategic District goals. Accelerate the incubation process for ideas by establishing an excellence in beta testing, using the “small bets out of sight” concept.
    4. Develops, implements, and monitors tracking mechanisms for innovative strategies. Designs methods to track the effectiveness of new initiatives, such as return on investment analysis and recommend decisions based on the outcomes. Manages the “off boarding” of tested ideas that are no longer productive for the District.
    5. Develops and oversee strategies, including funding, performance metrics and personnel, to ensure cost-effective delivery of high quality programs and initiatives. Tracks idea performance and create systems and data around implementation.
    6. Fosters a District-wide culture of innovation. Instills a culture of high expectations, continuous improvement and innovative thinking. Captures results of District’s innovation and improvement efforts and create structured opportunities and forums to share successful practices with leaders and administrators throughout the District.
    7. Manages the overall budget for the division, establishing and enforcing financial metrics and targets.
    8. Creates, maintains, and manages relationships with Memphis’ educational entrepreneurial leadership to ensure ideas from within the community have a conduit by which they may flow into the District.  
    9. Creates collaborative relationships with Memphis’ idea incubators to ensure their resources serve the District in the best way possible.
    10. Communicates Division initiatives and results to the greater Memphis community to ensure the progressive ideas of Shelby County Schools becomes a part of the greater conversation about the innovation that defines the community.
    11. Supports the overall vision and leadership of the District and the divisions. Serves as a key contributor in the Superintendent's cabinet to collaboratively establish the overall vision and provide support to District leadership.
    12. Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision or a closely related field plus a minimum of eight (8) years of successful experience in a top leadership position involving instructional programming in a major school district or any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or paid, exempt level directly relevant experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position for a total of fourteen (14) years.


    Degree Equivalency Formula:

    Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

    Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included.

    • Ability to manage daily administrative tasks without losing sight of long-term goals & planning

    Physical Requirements and Working Environment

    Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment; must be able to use hands and fingers


    Unavoidable Hazards:  The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.
