  • Purpose and Scope

    Directs efficient and effective operations of the transportation function and is the recognized expert in the field of school district busing, providing system-wide direction and expertise.  

    Essential Job Functions

    1. Oversees management of transportation vendor; evaluates quality of services and suggests improvements to balance cost efficiency with service excellence.
    2. Supports renegotiation of contract with transportation vendor as needed; provides inputs to contract terms that will maximize value for district.
    3. Designs routes within the routing system in order to maximize efficiency of each bus and minimize costs to district.
    4. Manages in-house routing staff as necessary to ensure clear communication to drivers, students, and parents; ensures safety of regular and SPED riders.
    5. Coordinates interface between in-house staff and vendor staff to ensure no redundant responsibilities; suggests further right-sizing of in-house staff and vendor staff as appropriate.
    6. Coordinates with Academics and Student Services offices to ensure proper transportation support of extra-curricular, co-curricular, and field trip services.
    7. Collaborates on shared services agreements as needed.
    8. Works collaboratively with the Chiefs, Executive Directors, and other Directors to formulate targets and goals for productivity, cost management, quality, and providing input on system-wide policy development as it relates to Transportation.
    9. Executes the responsibilities according to lawful and ethical standards. Uses personal judgment and initiative to develop effective and constructive solutions to challenges and obstacles.
    10. Develops a departmental budget, present, and defend program budget requirements; oversees and approve program expenditures and prepares financial forms and reports.
    11. Supervises staff establishing standards and effectively select, train, motivate, delegate, monitor and evaluate performance to ensure targets and goals are met. Facilitates professional development and serves as coach and mentor.
    12. Directs the preparation and maintenance of a variety of narrative and statistical reports, records, correspondence, and files related to assigned service, activities, and operations; provides for appropriate research and compiles reports, as needed.
    13. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration or related field of study plus an additional 7 years related experience, or equivalent for a total education and experience of 11 years.

    Strong analytic and problem-solving skills, with the ability to swiftly and accurately understand complex data and perform analysis; Skill in developing data-supported solutions and using fact-based logic; ability to translate complex analysis in easy-to-understand manner and present to a broad audience; Strong written and verbal communication skills; Outstanding leadership skills and ability to build high-performing teams through both recruitment and selection and professional development; Ability to tackle the operational challenges of the merged school district in a complex, changing political and educational environment; Ability to manage daily administrative tasks without losing sight of long-term goals and planning.


    Degree Equivalency Formula:

    Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

    Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included. 

    Physical Requirements and Working Environment

    Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment; must be able to use hands and fingers for sign language.

    Unavoidable Hazards:  The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.

    Sensory (ADA) Requirements: The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities.
