  • Purpose and Scope

    Assist in the design and installation of District instructional and administrative networks and the network infrastructure. The position is responsible for performing highly responsible technical work for design and implementation projects, providing on-site technical support and training of customers, performing system maintenance and upgrades, and performing related work as assigned. The position works independently, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

    Essential Job Functions

    1. Assists in the design, installation, configuration and upgrading of network systems District-wide.
    2. Consults with District personnel to help determine network needs.
    3. Assists in project planning, presentation and implementation; prepares and recommends network specifications to satisfy customer requirements; uses Auto Cad to prepare technical drawings as needed; obtains cost estimates; assists in developing installation schedules in coordination with department staff and staff in affected areas.
    4. Coordinates projects involving voice, data, and security cabling installed by contractors.
    5. Monitors performance of network systems; performs routine maintenance; troubleshoots and resolves computer network problems; documents problems and resolutions; performs upgrades to ensure the currency of network components.
    6. Communicates with vendors to secure assistance in resolving problems, obtain quotes on new products and expedite delivery.
    7. Inspects work in progress and at completion for compliance with applicable specifications, contracts, policies and procedures, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.
    8. Analyzes, develops and implements ideas for improved network efficiency and effectiveness.
    9. Ensures the prompt and professional completion of all work orders received, with minimal downtime for system users; documents all assigned projects.
    10. Assists in maintaining equipment inventory and tracking equipment location.
    11. Performs all duties in accordance with established policies, procedures, specifications, applicable codes and ordinances, and standards of quality and safety.
    12. Performs general clerical tasks as necessary, including preparing reports and records, entering and retrieving computer data, preparing spreadsheets, copying and filing documents, receiving and responding to e-mails and faxes, answering the telephone.
    13. Attends staff, committee and other meetings to exchange information; attends technical workshops, seminars or training to enhance job knowledge and skills.
    14. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management or related field or equivalent, plus 4 years of experience in a related field for a total education/experience of 8 years.

     

    Degree Equivalency Formula:

    Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

    Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included. 

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Knowledge of theories, concepts and principles of computer science, network engineering, information systems management or a related field
    • Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate assigned projects
    • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures
    • Ability to comprehend and analyze complex projects, programs and data
    • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.

    Physical Requirements and Working Environment

    Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment; must be able to use hands and fingers for sign language.

    Unavoidable Hazards:  The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.

     

    Sensory (ADA) Requirements: The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities.
