The essential function of the position within the organization is to provide counseling and guidance to students with alcohol and drug use/abuse problems. The position is responsible for conducting diagnostic student assessments, providing individual and group counseling, working as a team member to ensure optimal academic and social achievement for students, maintaining case files, and performing related work as required.
1.Implements a comprehensive therapeutic alcohol and drug abuse intervention and prevention program in accordance with District policies and procedures and state regulations.2.Collaborates with supervisor, other counselors, principals, assistant principals, faculty, staff, and community resources in the planning and coordination of services to students.3.Participates in the development of educational programs and activities for presentation to school and community groups in the area of alcohol and drug abuse among school age children. 4.Counsels individuals and groups of students and parents to make thoughtful, healthy decisions about alcohol and drug use and promote achievement of academic, social/personal development and other identified goals.5.Provides referrals to various school, District, community, and professional services when appropriate.6.Establishes and maintains confidential student case files; prepares and submits required records and reports.7.Attends meetings with staff and service providers to discuss individual student education plans and progress.8.Conducts conferences with parents to discuss student progress and problems; assists in presenting parent workshops as requested.9.Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns and complaints in areas of responsibility.10.Performs routine administrative/office tasks as required, including but not limited to preparing correspondence, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, sending and receiving faxes, entering and retrieving computer data. 11.Attends training, conferences, and workshops as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills. 12.Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's Degree in a Mental Health related field and requires four (4) years of experience with demonstrated expertise in the area of alcohol and drug abuse prevention and/or treatment, or equivalent combination of education, training, or experience; requires licensure as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor from the Tennessee Department of Mental Health.
Knowledge of principles, concepts and theories of counseling guidance or mental health field; Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate assigned projects, responding flexibly to changing needs and shifting priorities; Ability to work with confidential issues and information in a secure manner; Ability to effectively interact and collaborate with others; skill in encouraging individuals on a personal, caring basis.
