Purpose and Scope

OVERVIEW

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

 

Delivers at a high level of competency in maintaining standards of excellence in Advanced Placement. Provides leadership, collaboration, and innovation in Advanced Placement programs, so that students may experience college-level coursework and increased preparation for post-secondary success. This involves working on unusually complex problems and providing solutions that are highly innovative and ingenious, achieving quality and work process improvement.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Provides leadership in developing, monitoring and implementing Advanced Placement courses to meet the identified needs of the system. This requires a high degree of ingenuity, creativity, resourcefulness, and competency in maintaining standards of excellence; is viewed as expert within the field. Serves as leader in the Advanced Placement and College Board programs.
  2. Division lead for Advanced Academics annual planning. Manages strategic planning process for Advanced Academics at all high schools, collaborating with Central Office staff, principals, school-based AP Coordinators, and counselors.
  3. Provides assistance to all professional school-based personal and/or community representatives regarding Advanced Placement courses and programs and works collaboratively with other professionals in the development of effective AP instructional and assessment techniques which are research based and achieve a system-wide result. Provides professional development and support to AP Coordinators to insure that College Board program requirements for syllabi and for assessment are met. May lead a team in the effort.
  4. Serves as liaison between the Division of Optional Schools and Advanced Academics and teachers, AP Coordinators, counselors, and principals on Advanced Placement curriculum and instructional matters and makes recommendations pertaining thereto. Assists principals in the identification of appropriate teachers for AP classes. Supports teachers in development of Advanced Placement course syllabi.
  5. Manages the Advanced Placement budget. Assists with the management of the Division budget.
  6. Plans and conducts AP specific professional growth activities. Leads programs, workshops and other in-service activities. Collaborates with the Division of Professional Development and ILDs.
  7. Assists teachers as needed or requested in the development of effective AP content specific curriculum implementation and instructional and assessment techniques. Identifies university/college-based experts in content specific areas to support teachers and students.
  8. Researches, provides and assists teachers as needed or requested in the development of effective instructional and assessment techniques which are research based in order to increase student achievement in Advanced Placement course and exams; advances teachers' knowledge of College Board standards and understanding including teaching strategies, assessments, and College Board data driven instruction.
  9. Deals with unusually complex problems and provides solutions that are highly innovative and ingenious, achieving quality and work process improvements. Ensures that the workgroup's goals and activities are in sync with and support the broader goals and objectives of the organization; and that the execution of responsibilities is in accordance to lawful and ethical standards.
  10. Assists the Division of Optional Schools and Advanced Academics in disaggregating student data, identifying student needs, selecting textbooks and materials, and establishing program goals. Leads data AP reviews with principals and other school-based administrative staff to identify school AP program strengths and weaknesses.
  11. Directs the preparation and maintenance of a variety of narrative and statistical reports, records, correspondence, and files related to assigned service, activities, and operations; provides for appropriate research and compiles reports, as needed.
  12. Provides family and community outreach for Advanced Placement. Plans, develops, and supervises AP student support activities for the District.
  13. Assists with the development and support of Optional Programs, providing guidance to school personnel and prospective families regarding program admission.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in an academic content area and an additional 5 years related experience, or equivalent for a total education/experience of 9 years. Tennessee teaching license with Administrative/TEM Certification preferred. A minimum of four years of successful experience as a high school classroom AP teacher or experience with Advanced Placement coursework and College Board programs as an AP Coordinator or high school instructional facilitator preferred. Proficient in the use of technology to include video presentation, word processing, database and spreadsheet applications. Budgeting experience, particularly the ability to develop and manage budgets, preferred.

 

Degree Equivalency Formula:

Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included.
