SUMMARY DESCRIPTION 

The Executive Director of Safety and Security will review and develop consistent police and security policies, officer disciplinary metrics, code of conduct, training requirements and schedules, credentialing, and all necessary protocols related to managing security staff. This position may require developing and monitoring safety standards, implementing and monitoring training and other security related matters to effectively ensure the safety of all Memphis-Shelby County Schools campuses and facilities.

Qualified candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field and at least 10 years of experience with law enforcement practices and methods, preferably in a school district, including 5 years of experience managing/supervising security and/or police officers. 

 

 

 

Essential Job Functions

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates a comprehensive security/school safety program.
  • Serves as a liaison with local law enforcement agencies to monitor the daily operation of the School Resource Officer (SRO) program and other law enforcement issues on the school campuses. Works with local law enforcement agencies to encourage community-policing efforts on school campuses.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of security plans for special events involving the school facilities within the jurisdiction of Memphis-Shelby County Schools.
  • Provides training and assistance to site-based administrators in matters of safety and security. Directs/coordinates the periodic assessment/audit of school facilities and grounds to determine safety and security issues.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of a District level Crisis Response Plan. Assists/advises in the development of crisis management/emergency response plans as part of each school’s safety plan.
  • Provides requested reports to the Superintendent on matters pertaining to school safety.
  • Serves as the leader of the District’s Safe Schools Committee to develop and revise the District’s Safe School Plan. Implements ongoing safety and training programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Successful candidates possess:

  • understand emergency management and preparedness
  • experience developing and presenting recommendations both orally and in writing;
  • the ability to effectively analyze and allocate appropriate utilization of staff, inventory, equipment and other resources required for successful completion of job duties; 
  • experience in change management, organizational structure, performance management, and /or administrative responsibilities;
  • experience in developing, revising, and implementing standard policies and procedures; and
  • proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
