Purpose and Scope

The Community Schools Specialist (CSS) is a school-based position, working under the vision and direction of the school principal and Community Schools Manager to build effective partnerships among families, schools and community stakeholders to support student learning. The CSS coordinates, plans, and implements support programs and services within the school and the community to ensure the academic and social success of students.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Assesses which services are most needed at the school and works with the school leadership team, the community, families and agencies to bring the identified services to the school. 
  1. Conducts need and asset assessments to prioritize services, identify gaps in services, and build on existing supports. 
  1. Creates and implements the community schools plan in collaboration with all school stakeholders. 
  1. Establishes, maintains, and updates agreements and MOUs with partners and programs. 
  1. Collaborates with the Student, Family, and Community Affairs Office (SFCA) on programming for the Community School and support the community engagement work, and other engagement initiatives. Supports schools to build their capacity to develop and foster productive partnerships that facilitate positive relationships. 
  1. Coordinates community resources serving the school, including tutoring, health services, arts & music, integrated student supports, and other resources identified per the need assessment and district-wide initiatives.
  2. Updates website to encompass volunteer, business and corporate information relevant to Community Schools and its support. 
  1. Tracks the development of ongoing culturally relevant and responsive programming, training and support for diverse groups. 
  1. Provides strategic and logistical support for community engagement efforts at the school, community, and district level. 
  1. Collaborates with the school team to monitor outcomes and the effectiveness of partnerships. 
  1. Performs other related student, family, and community engagement duties as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Social Work, Communications, or other related field; Plus two (2) years of related work experience in a related field; OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience totaling six (6) years.  Proven successful experience working in a school setting preferred.

Degree Equivalency Formula:
Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.
Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included.
