Purpose and Scope

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

 

The essential function of the position within the organization is to provide interpreting and other support services to students who are deaf and hard of hearing who are participating in inclusive or self-contained settings during the school day as well as during extra-curricular activities. The position is responsible for interpreting for students, providing appropriate signs to students and staff when needed, providing guidance and assistance to students as needed, and performing related work as assigned. The position works under general supervision according to some procedures; decides how and when to complete tasks.

Essential Job Functions

1.Assists deaf and hard of hearing students in their communication with teachers, administrators and other students.

2.Interprets instructions, announcements and general conversation for students.

3.Teaches and interprets sign language for students, teachers and staff.

4.Distributes, explains, assists with and collects classwork of deaf and hard of hearing students; reinforces classroom instruction as needed within the classroom environment.

5.Provides guidance and communication assistance to students as needed between classes, during lunch and during extracurricular activities as necessary and as assigned.

6.Assists in monitoring ensuring the safety and well-being at all times for deaf and hard of hearing students.

7.Consults and collaborates with IEP team members, parents (as instructed by certificated staff) and others as necessary to facilitate students' learning, track progress and facilitate improved communication skills and abilities.

8.Prepares and submits accurate and complete student records as assigned by appropriate staff.
9.Attends training, conferences and workshops as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.

10.Receives and responds to inquiries and concerns in areas of responsibility.

11.Performs routine administrative/office tasks as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, sending and receiving faxes and e-mails, entering and retrieving computer data.

12.Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in education, special education, sign language/interpretation or other related field and four (4) years of related work experience or equivalent combination of education, training, or experience; requires a minimum 3.0 certification on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment.

(PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED).

 

Degree Equivalency Formula:

Bachelor's Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

Master's Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master's degrees are required, years for Bachelor's Degrees must be included.
