Purpose and Scope

The Social-Emotional Learning Manager (SEL Manager) leads district-wide implementation of social-emotional learning initiatives aligned with Memphis-Shelby County Schools’ vision that Greatness Grows Here. This leader ensures SEL systems and support are fully embedded in the district’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), with a strong emphasis on Tier 0 (adult wellness and culture) through Tier 3 (intensive student interventions) to promote whole-school well-being and positive climate.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Partner with the Director of SEL to lead the district’s SEL strategic vision.
  2. Design and oversee SEL systems that address Tier 0 adult wellness, Tier 1 universal student instruction, and Tiers 2–3 targeted and intensive student supports.
  3. Coordinate high-quality SEL professional development and coaching for school staff, including wellness-centered PD.
  4. Monitor districtwide SEL data, including climate, behavior, and attendance indicators, to guide decision-making and growth.
  5. Align SEL implementation with broader MTSS, PBIS, and RTI²-B frameworks.
  6. Collaborate with departments such as Mental Health, Counseling, Behavior, and Student Support Services to ensure consistent, integrated systems.
  7. Support and supervise SEL Advisors to build site-based capacity for SEL and adult support.
  8. Promote innovation, continuous learning, and culturally responsive practices that support both students and staff.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Masters degree in Education, School Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or related field plus a minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience related to SEL, MTSS, or student support services; OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience totaling nine (9) years. (PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED).

 

Degree Equivalency Formula:

Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included.
