Purpose and Scope

Athletic Advisor delivers a high level of competency in athletic programming to provide students within the Memphis Shelby County School District a safe enjoyable athletic experience. This position works in close collaboration with administrators and coaches to plan, organize, and deliver a wide range of support services and activities for student athletes. Works on complex problems and provides solutions in the coordination of athletic efforts. Oversees the implementation and ongoing management of district initiatives, state and national compliance. 

Essential Job Functions

This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge or abilities associated with this classification but are intended to accurately reflect the primary job elements.  

  1. Assists the Director of Athletics in maintaining program alignment with district wide goals, strategic plans and academic priorities. Advises on the development and enhancement of school-based athletic programs.  
  2. Reviews athletic programming to identify areas of strengths and improvements then work with the appropriate stakeholders to manage and rectify problems impeding success by explaining rules, regulations, requirements, and restrictions as needed. 
  3. Monitor facility usage and coordinate schedules to maximize access and minimize conflicts.  
  4. Coordinate the use of district athletic facilities and equipment by supporting the planning of large-scale events (e.g., championships, jamborees). 
  5. Collect and examine athletic related metrics for continuous improvement to support efforts to increase access, participation and academic competence. Prepares metrics reports for internal and external use upon request or as needed. 
  6. Promotes positive public relations through media, social media, and community events; highlighting student-athletes, team achievements, and program milestones. 
  7. Serves as a point of contact for school-based athletic directors and administrators regarding athletic matters by serving as a liaison between the school system and external partners.  
  8. Facilitates professional development training for athletic staff.  
  9. Assist management in planning and administering special programs or services for student athletes.  
  10. Works collaboratively with community partners, stakeholders, local, state and national organizations to plan, prepare and implement changes in athletic programming designed to achieve systemwide goals and objectives.   
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed. 

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Communcations, Physical Science, Sports Management, and/or health related field of study, plus an additional four (4) years related experience, OR a combination of education / experience for a total of eight (8) years. (PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED). 

 

Degree Equivalency Formula: 

Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience. 

Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included.
