Purpose and Scope

The Academic Leadership Support Manager, under the direction of the Leadership Development Director, shall serve as the Instructional Leader for aspiring school leaders in Memphis Shelby County Schools, working toward the goal of ensuring there is an effective leader in every building. Helps build the capacity of aspiring principals to function as effective instructional leaders able to positively impact teaching, learning, school culture, and working conditions in their schools. Designs and implements intensive leadership coaching and development experiences so that leaders develop in a core set of leadership skills to improve student learning. Responsible for ensuring a quality education for every student by coaching aspiring leaders toward a rigorous vision for effective leadership.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Performs management responsibilities regarding staff in accordance with policies and procedures; responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training, appraising performance, discipline and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  2.  Provides professional direction in the coordination and alignment of support programs and implementations for all of the schools, including the appropriate use of support personnel.
  3.  Develops a scope and sequence of rigorous content for leadership development, aligned to a clear and concise framework for effective leadership.
  4.  Manages some programming elements to ensure the development of leadership pipeline programs that cultivate future leadership.
  5.  Provides aspiring leaders and school leaders with high quality professional development that embeds personal leadership skills and skills in key leverage areas such as instructional leadership, systematic use of formative assessment, culture building, behavior management, and performance management
  6.  Collaborates with Assistant Superintendent of Schools and Leadership and other district departments to develop ai1d implement short-and long- range plans for schools to raise student achievement.
  7.  Ensures adherence to all pertinent policies and procedures, laws and regulations, codes and ordinances and standards of quality and safety; provides support to all schools in regards to compliance issues, both state and local.
  8.  Works collaboratively with other directors and management representatives to achieve a system-wide result, and provides strategic direction for individual schools.
  9.  Supports aspiring principals' development in regards to school culture and climate, performance management and data-driven decision practices in alignment with SCS's missions, beliefs, and priorities.
  10.  Organizes the process for recruitment and selection of aspiring leaders for the leadership pipeline.      
  11.  Develops a deeper partnership with principals, coaches and department managers with Academic Office.
  12.  Monitor and evaluate academic programs and student achievement in selected schools.
  13. Partners and shadows the lead coach from pipeline partners to develop skill as a leadership coach and to co-construct the Memphis Shelby County Schools' model for coaching aspiring leaders.
  14.  Liaise with directors of selected departments to ensure that the appropriate instructional support is provided.
  15.  Coordinates one on one coaching for aspiring leaders (coaching on key leadership competencies), including setting and tracking progress toward rigorous development goals.
  16.  Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Education, Public or Business Administration, Management, or other related field, plus an additional five (5) years related experience, or equivalent, for a total education/experience of nine (9) years. Valid Tennessee School Administrator's license, along with other certifications as required by state and local policies (e.g., Tennessee professional teacher's license).

Degree Equivalency Formula:

Bachelor's Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

Master's Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master's degrees are required, years for Bachelor's degrees must be included.
